چکیده

This paper addresses the problem of the contradiction between estimation accuracy and estimation range of the frequency estimation in OFDM. According to the packet structure of IEEE Standard 802.11a and the characters of short training symbols, a new frequency offset estimation algorithm is presented. A two stages strategy based on auto-correlation algorithm is used to solve the contradiction between estimation accuracy and estimation range. The coarse frequency offset estimating bases on the identity of half cyclical short training symbol while the exact frequency offset estimating is done by the cancellation operation of long training symbols. The simulation based on 802.11a PHY model is done. And the simulation result shows that this algorithm not only overcome the influence of carrier frequency offset but also eliminate the carrier frequency offset. Comparing with the traditional algorithm, proposed algorithm can reduce the complication of the calculation while the estimation range can be expanded to 2 times. The results of the performance comparison are presented in terms of mean and mean-square error (MSE) obtained by simulations. The new algorithm is examined in Gaussian and Multipath fading environments for comparison. Furthermore, the precise estimation can be acquired as well.

A MIMO System with Backward Compatibility for OFDM-Based WLANs

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected as the basis for the new IEEE 802.11a standard for highspeed wireless local area networks (WLANs). We consider doubling the transmission data rate of the IEEE 802.11a system by using two transmit and two receive antennas. We propose a preamble design for this multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system that is backward compatible wi...

Frequency offset estimation in OFDM systems in the presence of IQ imbalance

The orthogonality between sub-carriers in OFDM systems is disrupted by offsets between the carrier frequencies in the transmitter and receiver as well as by the so-called IQ mismatch in the mixers. When treated separately, effective algorithms exist for estimation and compensation of frequency offset as well as IQ imbalance. However, with both effects present, such algorithms do not lead to use...

Low complexity frequency offset estimation in the presence of DC offset

This paper describes how to perform a low complexity frequency offset estimation in the presence of direct current (DC) offset based on a received periodic preamble. By designing a suitable preamble, we perform frequency and DC offsets estimation concurrently, followed by a simple compensator which reduces the frequency offset error induced by the presence of either a residual or actual DC offs...
